Calling for an Ambitious Response to New Legislation

Auckland Council is currently responding to new housing legislation: the RMA (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Act 2021, and the National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS-UD). We believe this new housing legislation is a significant opportunity for our city and Auckland Council should be more ambitious with it.

Prior to the release of the draft response to this legislation, we recommend that the Auckland Council Planning Committee move to:
- Remove special character overlays, but retain and improve the listed heritage protections.
- Upzone to enable at least six storeys in the isthmus suburbs, north of State Highway 20, and in locations served by the frequent bus network, in addition to the catchments of the rapid transit network, due to their excellent accessibility and high demand.
